The association between several components is one of the key point to increase the power level in power electronics. This problem is encountered either inside the modules – between all elementary chips-, or during the converter manufacturing, when power modules are connected together. The aim of this work is not to study again all problems encountered in the past, but to carry an extensive analysis on series and parallel association of insulated gate components. This begins with a generic approach of the switching cell, including semiconductors, driver and all stray components. Design rules have therefore been proposed, in order to improve the balancing of electrical constraints, between all semiconductors. For parallel association, the major role of cabling has been underlined. For series association an active clamping circuit has been proposed, based on the knowledge about switching phenomena.
