Savage Madness Meets with Comic Folly

Analysis of As You Like It, by Shakespeare, and Philaster, by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher, shows that, contrary to the period's conventional moral teaching, certain ignorant and savage impulses may be diverted and channelled, even rendered productive, by contact with the comic.
