THE EVALUATION AND MANAGEMENT OF NOISE IS NOW A MAJOR CONCERN OF PUBLIC AUTHORITIES, WHICH RESULTED IN THE ADOPTION BY THE EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE 2002/49/EC. A EUROPEAN ENGINEERING MODEL IS BEING DEVELOPED. TO FACILITATE ITS USE, A SIMPLIFIED METHOD FOR MEASURING THE EMISSION DATA IN EACH COUNTRY WOULD BE WELCOME. ALONG WITH THIS NEED, ONLY AVERAGED INDICATORS (LDEN, LNIGHT) FIND THEIR LIMIT IN URBAN AREAS. A MORE DETAILED MODELING WOULD ALSO CALCULATE THE MOST RELEVANT ACOUSTIC INDICATORS. THIS WORK AIMS TO MODEL VEHICLES (MAINLY LONG ONES) BY EQUIVALENT POINT SOURCES. FIRST OF ALL WE FOCUSE ON THE MEASUREMENT OF THE EQUIVALENT SOURCE HEIGHT USING TWO MICROPHONES. A SPECIFIC DEVELOPMENT IS PROVIDED FOR BROADBAND SOURCES, AND A SIMPLIFIED MODEL FOR TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE MOVEMENT IS PROPOSED. A NEW AND MORE GENERAL METHOD IS THEN DEVELOPPED. IT ALLOWS TO CALCULATE THE NUMBER OF EQUIVALENT POINT SOURCES, THEIR POSITION AND THEIR SPECTRUM FROM PASS-BY MEASUREMENTS AT NM MICROPHONES (NM BEING TYPICALLY 3-4). IF THE SOURCE DIRECTIVITY IS KNOWN, IT CAN BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. EXPERIMENTAL VALIDATIONS ARE STILL NEEDED. THE MOST PROMISING DEVELOPMENTS ARE : THE ABILITY TO OPTIMIZE THE DIRECTIVITY OF EQUIVALENT POINT SOURCES, THE ADAPTATION OF EXISTING FREQUENCY MODELS (RUDNICK AND RASMUSSEN) TO BROADBAND MOVING SOURCES.
