Decision support systems for hazardous wastes treatment

Hazardous wastes represent an important threat to the environment. A treatment is therefore necessary before their disposal. There is a large variety of techniques and facilities available, and the choice of the most appropriate solution is difficult. It involves a good knowledge of all the possibilities and of the decision criteria. To help waste producers in the identification of treatment solutions, a study of the treatment techniques was undertaken. The distinction was made between on-site and off-site treatment. This study lead to the definition of the parameters that must be taken into account for the choice of an appropriate solution. These elements were used to develop two decision support systems for the selection of treatment solutions for hazardous wastes: * the first one proposes off-site treatment solutions for any kind of hazardous waste, * the second one is dedicated to the metal finishing industry for which on-site recycling or more conventional solutions are proposed.
