Characterization of the inter-seismic tectonic deformations of the island of Taiwan using SAR Interferometry

The island of Taiwan results from the ongoing collision between the Eurasian plate and the Philippine Sea plate. The aim of this thesis is to detect and quantify inter-seismic tectonic deformations caused by this collision. Both Differential SAR Interferometry (DInSAR) and Persistent scatterers (PS-InSAR) are used in order to provide a deformation map of the ground with a time series of deformation. The density and the precision of measurements are impressive and allow a precise mapping of active faults. After a state of the art of principles and limits of the method, an estimation of its potential in Taiwan is tackled. Then DInSAR and PS-InSAR are applied, with ALOS PALSAR data (in L-Band), on three studies areas: (1) the Longitudinal Valley, in Eastern Taiwan. The shortening rate across the valley is estimated about 3 cm/yr. The obtained deformation map allows a precise mapping of the major active fault accommodating for its major part the deformation: the Longitudinal Valley Fault. The inter-seismic creep is estimated and successfully compared with GPS data. (2) the Hengchun peninsula, in south ending of Taiwan. Located at the top the accretionary prism, the Hengchun fault is creeping with a rate estimated about 1 cm/yr thanks to the deformation map from interferometry results. (3) the deformation front, in Western Taiwan. It is a preliminary study with lots of various deformations between 1995 and 2010: the uplift of the Tainan anticline, the subsidence of the Pingtung plain, the creep activity of the Fengshan fault and the subsidence close to the Choshui river.
