REFORMS AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATIONS IN ALGERIA The starting point of this research is the reform of 1988-1991 which marked the end of the socialist period in Algeria and opened the way for a transition to the market and its institutions. Although interrupted prematurely, this reform has set the general framework (still in place today) for the economic transformations that have been taking place in this country, mainly due to the dynamics it has triggered and the questions it has raised. The introductory chapter (I) presents the main stylized facts of the Algerian economy and the major stages of its evolution before looking at the reform and proposing an analysis within the theories of postsocialist transition (Chapter II). The next chapters are devoted to the changes regarding some characteristics of the Algerian economy: hydrocarbons (III), industrialization (IV) and the labour market (V). In the last chapter (VI) questions are raised about the recent developments in the reform policy in the context of the global financial crisis.
