Analysis and design of secret-key ciphers

can be achieved by a symmetric algorithm only if it is based onbuilding blocks with exceptional properties; however, the particularalgebraic structures of these building blocks may be at the origin ofa new weakness since they can be exploited for mounting a newattack. This underlying principle is here illustrated for bothfamilies of symmetric algorithms, stream ciphers and block ciphers.
