Bonaventure asks : "Whether Adam in the state of innocence cognized God thus, as Go dis cognized in the state of glory?" (II sent., D. 23 a. II, Q. 3), and he proposes some critic of what he reads in Hugo of Saint-Victor on this subject. This article analyses the arguments of Bonaventure, Hugo of Saint-Victor, but also Richard and Thomas Aquinas on this topic. It appears that some place has to be found for Adams knowledge of God in between ours and that of the blessed in heaven. The solution of Hugo of a partial but immediate vision in Eden is criticized by Bonaventure because of the condemnations of 1241-44, that he quotes extensively at the end of his question. This question, as well as that of Thomas, develops interesting considerations about optics and vision.
