Les mutations professionnelles comme soutien de la présence des hommes dans la profession de sage-femme

The presence of men minority in professional spaces gave rise to little sociological studies. Male midwives appears to be a fruitful field, firstly because they do not represent more than 2 % of the workforce, on the other hand because the assignment of this activity to the female gender is twofold : the name intimately associate activity to the woman and this activity seems to be always exercised by women. Are these men likely to change the professional practices, including those to parturients ? Do they change the relationship with empathy ? Do they transgress the internal divisions in this professionnal group, specifically the distribution between modes of activity? Or do they change the relation with the professional independence and the autonomy in the exercise of the activity? Ultimately, the transgressions made by men seem rather limited. They are weakly related to their presence, which is accepted by the majority of midwives. Men accompany the transformations that knows the profession , especially those aimed at better professional recognition, both material and symbolic. And the professional mutations play as support for their continued presence in the professional space.
