The medium mountain region of Western Europe is both a rural and a highland area. For this reason, it is victim of conflicting economies, which often leave it in a weak and critical condition. But, as in other rural sectors, major changes are affecting society, agriculture, tourism and other industries of the highlands, thus aggravating internal oppositions.
