The first archivolt of the occidental portal of Autun's cathedral and one of the eight capitals of the em- brasures have been dedicated to the Elders of the Apocalypse. At first sight, those characters incarnate the assessors of Christ-Judge represented in the center of the tympanum, but several evidences suggest that they actually adore the Lamb which was probably sculpted on the top of this archivolt and that this celestial liturgy echoed the celebration of the Eucharist. In this point of view, we may suppose that this part of the program was intended to show the efficiency of the masses in obtaining the salvation of the souls
