The Nko writing system was created in 1949 by a Guinean autodidact Solomana Kante for Manding language varieties. It is growing more and more popular not only in Guinea, but also in other countries where the Manding is spoken. This writing system functions as a vector of a written standard based on the Maninka variety of the Kankan area in Guinea, "Maninka-Mori". A quite probable scenario, in a mid-range perspective, is an establishment of this written norm for the entire Manding zone in West Africa.
