Is the Mediterranean a "demographic frontier" for Europe?

Fernand Braudel wrote in 1986: "The Mediterranean is not a frontier, but a place of exchange". Yet it's common to think of this sea as an economic and political frontier. Can such border-based reasoning also be applied to population dynamics, meaning that the Mediterranean is a "demographic border"?
