Le immagini come commento : miniature e esegesi nella Bibbia di Stefano Harding

The miniatures in medieval manuscripts of the Bible are not always simply illustrations. They can be also commentaries of the biblical text. The article explores the relationships between the practice of iconographical creation in the Stephen Harding Bible (Dijon, Bibliothèque Municipale, mss. 12-15, 1108-1111) and the 'methods' of medieval exegetes. These practices have several common points. In the Bible, some miniatures quote and combine together many different ideas from patristic exegetical works, compose them with new lectures and bring up contemporary themes. So, as well as the exegetical treatises, the images build up a plurality of senses from one biblical story. Some miniatures can be read following the four senses of Scriptures (history, typology, tropology, and anagogy), that is another common point with biblical exegesis.
