To speak about surfing and tradition can surprise since this practice is often proposed like a sporting model emerging in the circle of the STAPS and APPN, through, in particular, the name of « sliding sports ». Colour-bearer of a sporting modernity, surfing and by extension slips it, then proposed according to certain points of view « a lifestyle based on the marginality, the rebellion, the primacy of the feelings, the research of the extreme, the costume ». There would be thus rupture with the more traditional sporting models of the time, developing, the compliance team spirit with the rules, training, security, etc. However, the practice that we observed during many years showed us another thing. Our work on the nonfederate regular surfers as a Basque Country and south of Landes revealed that this self-managed activity is organized around usual rules and of values one cannot classical any more. This leads us to question two points: the absence of taking into account of this internal organization in the approach of the market surfing by industries of « slips », and the « innovation » of these practices which do not seem so new even if they are organized in parallel of the institutional devices, even are opposed to it, because finally continues a system of usual rules here, letting think that the innovation is in the tradition.
