Health education (HE) aims at helping all young people gradually to acquire the resources that they need in order to make choices and exhibit responsible behaviour concerning both their own health and that of others. The successful implementation of health education in schools is largely dependent on teacher commitment and on how teachers effectively conceptualise their HE activities as commensurate with their professional identity. This research examines the activity of primary school teachers in France, where HE is a cross curricular theme, and in Ireland, where HE is a core subject.
