Le quotidien d'un lettré en voyage à Nagasaki : le Journal de Shiba Kōkan "

The Shiba Kōkan's Diary (Kôkan Saiyû nikki), written when traveling at Nagasaki, has always been considered as an exceptional document for the wealth of informations it contains on daily life at Edo period. Kôkan describes with great detail his occupations and the people he met during his trip. The present article focuses on his behaviour when staying in the town, his interest for calligraphies and paintings preserved in the temples and shrines, his taste for excursions and good food, his close relations with dutch interpreters, and his way to make new friends or to find new customers for his own paintings.
