Intelligent Transportation Systems

Nowadays, vehicles, more specifically cars, are among the most sophisticated tools that are available to us. In fact, car today is a mix of computing involving multiple processors (vehicles are using processors that are more and more powerful and capable of more complex calculations), mechanics (involving pieces that turn at great speed with maximum safety and reliability), and even pyrotechnics (with airbags or seatbelts). Beyond vehicles, the whole field of transportation has experienced a profound change and increasing computerization, with the emergence of GPS receivers and smartphones, has equipped many users (whether they are pedestrians, train users, conductors, or deliverers) who are now able to communicate and perform important operations. Currently, all mobile constructors are working on advanced solutions, whether they involve infrastructures or not. For example, we can quote the trials that aim to calculate optimal speed by arriving at a set of traffic lights when they change to green to save fuel or even the Wifi On-Board system proposed by PSA, which ensures a connection to the mobile network and also serves as a Wifi connector for all the passengers in the vehicle. Naturally, these tools are best used to offer services that aim either to promote public transportation or to promote safety and reduce the harmful effects of vehicles on the environment. In this chapter, we will present a set of solutions by focusing on the services offered, which come from research projects involving laboratories that have been to the “ambient intelligence” CNRS school and more specifically to the “intelligent vehicles” workshop.
