L'impopulaire télévision populaire

Televised social space is built on a deceptive image. The fact is that the locus of discussion of 'society' about itself represents only a part of that society, namely the upper middle categories of the tertiary sector. Its principal or at least most constant characteristic is basically that it is mostly made for and by the social groups that are in charge of teaching, justice, healthcare, culture, information, administration and communication. Far from reflecting popular views, the constructions of issues such as euthanasia or transsexuality, the definition of behaviour deemed legitimate, desirable qualities and the image of France that counts mirror the convictions shared by these experts in social engineering. The values of mutual attentiveness, absolute tolerance and cultural liberalism are here compulsory. This televised domination is especially significant in that the construction of reality it proposes is achieved more and more implicitly. Thus as televised talk shows are more and more planned, pacified and even rationalised, so this social monopoly narrows.
