L'élite sous la mitraille

This article studies the 22 students and graduates of the Ecole normale with an agrégation in mathematics who died "for France" in 1914-1918. Data assembled here make it clear that they experience a terrible blow in the first years of the Great War. It is shows that they were proportionally more exposed that students and graduates of the Ecole polytechnique. International comparison with Great Britain, the United States, and Germany are sketched here, which underscore the fact that this experience was widely shared. At this level of analysis, no notable difference seems to emerge.
