Modelling of salt structures in South-West France

The South part of the Aquitaine basin is characterized by Triassic salt deposits and structures which can be more or less complex. These formations are particularly targeted for storage in saline cavities. In order to study potential for such storage, a geological and hydrogeological is led on a area of about 500 km2. A 3D geological model is built to characterize relationships between salt formations and surrounding aquifers. The 3D model is based on (i) interpretation of thirteen 2D reprocessed seismic profiles and two regional reprocessed seismic lines, (ii) 127 petroleum and BSS (Subsurface Database) wells and (iii) geological maps at 1/50 000 scale. The extent is 22 km in East-West direction and 24 km in North-South direction. Nine geological interfaces have been modelled from Trias to surface. Data import has been particularly focused on management of seismic data and their consistency with other data. The final 3D model shows quite complex geometries of Triassic salt formations and their contacts with surrounding units among which regional aquifers. These results are used to evaluate storage potential and feasability.
