IMS based WLAN/3G convergence and advanced mobility features

In this chapter we define new strategies for WLAN 802.11 and 3G convergence based on the service delivery infra-structure proposed by IMS. These strategies are beyond the 3GPP solutions for WLAN access to the IMS. Our main aim from this convergence is to introduce new services such as session mobility/splitting and intelligent call routing between these two access technologies. To this end, we extend the IMS policy based admission control architecture and adapt it to the different characteristics of these two access technologies. Subsequently, by taking advantage of the IMS infrastructure, we define a mobility server that can provide the sought inter-technology session mobility. This mobility server is able to apply the advanced policy rules for transferring a session from one access technology to the other. We show how this advanced mobility feature can lead to a more efficient resource utilization.
